Atelier Fifteen-O-Five

I'm sure many of you have beautiful, well-built furnishings that were expensive when purchased, but no longer fit in your new home or design scheme (I know I do).  My clients are always asking me where they can take these former treasures.  Luckily, a friend and client of mine, interior designer Dianne Josephs, saw a need for a place like this and recently opened a fabulous consignment store, Atelier Fifteen-O-Five.

Before the September grand opening, Dianne renovated 2,000 square feet of a warehouse and created charming vignettes of dining rooms, dens, and formal living rooms, in a chic, upscale fashion. Each little area is accessorized, giving wonderful examples of how these pieces can be arranged in a home. Love those alabaster lamps! 

 


The store has a wide array of high-end furnishings in different styles. Dianne personally selects every item, searching for pieces that are of high quality and excellent condition and that also possess a certain uniqueness. She constantly receives new merchandise thanks to other local antique dealers, like Joyce Horn and Carl Moore, who refer their customers interested in consigning to Atelier Fifteen-O-Five. Dianne is able to obtain such quality pieces because many of the empty nester set, including herself, don't have room for their beautiful antique furniture and great vintage pieces after downsizing to a smaller home.


Dianne draws from over thirty years in the design business. She has such a talent and passion for what she does, and it certainly comes through in the way she thoughtfully displays and arranges the lovely pieces she offers.


This beautiful birdcage was one of Dianne's favorite things in the store (sadly, it just sold). Since I've been figuring out exactly what kind of boutique I want mine to be, I always love asking store owners what their ideal shop would have. Dianne said she'd love to serve and sell delicious nibbles and have flower arrangements from Johnathan Andrew Sage, a floral designer who she worked with years ago.


She has so many pretty items - it's hard to choose a favorite, but I do love this large, 18th century Italian buffet/etagere, circa 1770.


I'll take any chance I get to study finishes on older pieces. The distressed, antique paint treatment on this buffet would be so fun to replicate!


If you're thinking of reselling some furniture or accessories, remember to choose items that are close to flawless, with no rips, tears, stains or broken legs. Atelier Fifteen-O-Five doesn't only carry large furniture like tables, seating and chests; they also accept lighting, art, mirrors, statues, vases and other decor. I think her selection of light fixtures, chandeliers and lamps is especially wonderful!


The shop carries a fantastic assortment of architectural fragments and carved moldings as well. Dianne has always loved architecture and grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, near incredible homes and estates designed by architect David Adler.  Her design outlook was greatly influenced by her time working at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago in the 70s.


While in Chicago, Dianne got to explore the architecture of H.H. Richardson, Mies Van de Rohe, and
Louis Sullivan and visit all the great buildings in the area.  "Just taking in the exterior and interior of Marshall Fields was a tremendous experience!" She's been so fortunate to meet interior design legends like Vesta V'Soske, Countess Lee Gozzi of Fortuny, Ed Wormley, and Angelo Donghia. I'm sure these opportunities gave her the wonderful eye she has for diverse and varied styles!

Elizabeth Garrett DeWitt--Eclectic Design

 I have been working with Designer Elizabeth Garrett DeWitt for years and am so excited to feature a home we worked together on. Designed by Travis Mattingly of Architectural Solutions, and built by Richard Price Custom Homes, this eclectic French influenced home is a wonderful mix of clean lines, color combinations, comfortable transitional and contemporary furnishings and art with a splash of antiques.

 

In designing this home for a young family with two small children, Elizabeth wanted to bring in a grey pallet but not make the house feel cold. Knowing that the couple would need to furnish and accessorize the home, she brilliantly chose color combinations that were interesting on their own, only picking finishes in areas where the biggest impact would be made. In the entrance which sets the tone of the home, plaster was a must, accentuating the groin detail in the ceiling. It is a great complement to the Italian porcelain tiles from Casalinea that everyone fell in love with!!  

The office which leads from the entrance is just too pretty to close off. By using an interesting paint pallet Elizabeth was able to achieve a high end look. Because the cabinet doors are flat, the color combination of SW Agreeable Gray on the walls and SW Knitting Needles in high gloss on the cabinets give a contemporary expensive look on thier own, leaving more in the budget to spend on these wonderful furnishings and fabulous artwork by Mel Dewees.

In the dining room Elizabeth wanted to combine the clients existing antique buffet, as well as antique sconces from Joyce Horn Antiques with more modern elements.

Originally the group had discussed painting cherry blossoms as an accent wall, but me not being a big fan of accents suggested the idea of a contemporay allover pattern. We all loved the way it turned out--dramatic and a nice play off of the antique elements mixed with the ball gown like silk drapes and Circa chandelier.

The chairs were inspired by a photo that the homeowners had shown Elizabeth.  Making adjustments to give them a one of a kind look, Elizabeth had the chairs made.

Leading from the dining room to the kitchen is a chic butlers pantry. Keeping the flow of SW Agreeable Gray from the rest of the house, the cabinet colors was changed to SW Dovetail in high gloss which looks great with the antique mirrors and marble counters. If you look through the mirrors you can see the contemporary design of the door leading to the wine cellar.

 
The homeowner spends a lot of time in the kitchen so both functionality and beauty were important!! The cabinet color carries throught he main trim color SW Pure White from the rest of the home creating a nice flow throughout! 

 Classic Calcutta marble was used on the perimeter counters and backsplash, combined with a white quartz island. The island was designed to allow for the countertop to turn and run down the sides to the floor--stunning!!!

The homeowners had done an amazing job furnishing their previous home which gave Elizabeth a starting point in the kitchen, breakfast area. She already had four of the breakfast chairs, two barstools, and the smaller version of the classic Saarinen table. Although they added to the chairs the homeowner owned, they did decide to go with a new oval shape table due to the layout in the room and the fact that we were using a round table in the dining room.

What a beautiful eclectic comfortable family room!! There are so many details in this room both in architecture and design. The use of the antique armoire and sconces at the fireplace with the more modern pieces and artwork created a great balance of old and new.  

 Elizabeth, the homeowners, and myself really enjoyed working with builder Richard Price. He and his team were so organized.  Richard pays great attention to detail and goes above and beyond to instill the clients happiness, which makes him not your average builder.

 

The homeowner always had a vision for the formal powder.  The custom cut marble herringbone floor combined with polished plastered walls, antique mirror and sleek hardware and bowl is exactly what she envisioned.  

  Stunning how beautiful the chandelier plays off the rich color of the polished plaster!!

Moving upstairs Elizabeth wanted to create a master retreat for the busy homeowners.  The beautiful sleek freestanding tub acts as the star of the bathroom.  The grey and white pallet is very soothing and sophisticated.  I love the way the hand-painted dome turned out, just enough detail to enhance this architectural feature in the room.

 

When there is no trim detail in a dome, a painted border feature is the perfect way to define a space.  I had so much fun working on this project with the fun homeowners, designer Elizabeth Garrett DeWitt and builder Richard Price. Villa de Luxe - Designer Showhouse

I was thrilled to be a part of Houston's Villa De Luxe Designer Showhouse benefiting Preservation Houston. Love the Promo piece below that Muffy Buvens who also is my graphic designer created for the event.

With so many new constructions cropping up in Houston, it was a real treat to work on this historic 1924 Italian Renaissance Revival home that Preservation Houston chose for the 2013 showhouse.

 

Located in the gorgeous Shadyside neighborhood near the Museum District and Rice University, the house, designed by architect William Ward Watkin, was originally built for hardware magnet F. A. Heitmann and stands on two acres of land!

Designers Jane Page Crump and Bill Stubbs (you may recognize him from his TV show, Moment of Luxury) were the two oh-so-gracious chairs of the showcase.

Entering the estate, you're greeted by these very rich, traditional wood-paneled walls that designer Peggy Hull offset with some contemporary elements like the bright pink chair, patterned pillow and modern accessories.

I adore the dining room that the talented design firm, Lucas Eilers, created! Applying Farrow and Ball Churlish Green (donated by Boxwood) over a tan grass-cloth wallcovering gave these walls a marvelous texture that I just love! The lush chairs are piped with a deep chocolate brown, pulling in the table color while also accentuating the beautiful lines of the chairs. Segreto was honored to paint the details on the ceiling to complete the room's beautiful backdrop.

Here's my team, hard at work, preparing the ceiling to be glazed and hand-painted. On the right, you can see the original rendering for the mural detail! We decided to simplify the pattern on the rendering, so I taped over a few of the areas we needed to omit.

The table was set to perfection with amazing orchid centerpieces, pretty china and crystal, and monogrammed napkins with the Preservation Houston icon! The painting by Hunt Slonem, represented by Gremillion & Co., brings a great pop of color and sophisticated whimsy to the room.

Jane Page Design Group did a wonderful job - as usual - with the design of the formal living room, combining a feel of old Hollywood glam with contemporary furnishings.  To respect the history of the estate, the original fireplace remains the focal point of the room. The abstract painting commissioned by Joyce Combs, really  marries the old with the new in a fabulous way.

I was so excited when Jane Page purchased two chairs from my shop! These 1930s beauties had a worn French blue finish on them when bought. To blend with the room and fabrics, she coated them in black lacquer - so perfect.

It was such a joy to work with the incredibly gifted (and prolific) designer, Bill Stubbs, and his wonderful assistant, Phyllis. Named to the AD 100, Architectural Digest’s list of the World’s Top Designers and Architects, Bill Stubbs is an inspiration.  I was excited to add the painted, carved detail to the ceiling that pulls the tone of the wall panels up and highlights the interesting shape of the ceiling. 

Heading upstairs, Montgomery Roth Architecture and Interior Design turned one of the bedrooms into a modern, functional home office. I love the color combinations and, of course, the well-executed ceiling finish from Imago Dei that brilliantly features the greek key design on the window treatments. 

Tokerud & Co. transformed a bedroom suite into a pied-à-terre and studio. Known as one of Houston's top contemporary design firms, they incorporated some unique furnishings like these chairs with novel excerpts written on the fabric.

I truly adore this fabulous light fixture - slick and glossy on the outside, white plaster floral relief on the inside. Beautiful!

The upstairs master has a soft romantic feel thanks to designer Donna Vining who incorporated a lavender damask stencil, linens and an eclectic assortment of antiques. I really liked the concept of having an upholstered poster bed. Although this bed is new, what a great way to update those beds that many of us bought in the 80s! Donna also writes a blog, Donna's Blog-A Designer's Perspective, which also featured many of the rooms in Villa de Luxe. 

Lynne Jones put together a bright, fun artist's studio with comfortable seating and a place to work.  If I hadn't been dressed up for my lecture there, I would have dived right in and started painting!!!

Darla Bankston May would definitely get the "Most Transformed Award" for her work converting the cinder block basement into a media sitting room.  Covering the walls and ceiling with Kravet fabric brought so much warmth, comfort and romance to the space. Her selections of clean line, yet comfortable furnishing from Mecox and Vieux Interiors look wonderful on the Madison Lily rug.  I have worked on many projects with Miss Darla, and I must say, once again - job well done!!!

The team at Laura U designed the interior of the estate’s Writer’s Cottage. They made a genuine design statement here, complete with a hanging bed and brass finishes.

I thought the teal screen was such a clever way to cover the air conditioning unit and add a decorative element at the same time!  What a fun room!!!  Laura U also writes a blog - check it out here.

McDugald-Steele and Articulture Designs collaborated on this exterior wall, creating an interesting, one-of-a-kind backdrop out of the white stucco wall. The flower arrangements throughout the house and at the special benefit event were all stunning.

Joyce Horn Antiques - Grand Opening at the New Location!!!

This Tuesday, March 12th, at 10 AM, Joyce Horn Antiques will unveil not only their latest shipment of French antiques, but also their new, 10,000 square foot location for the first time!  Join me for a sneak peek preview of the store, located at 7065 Old Katy Road in Houston, and a glimpse into the renovation process.

A challenge for most, Joyce had no problem sculpting a French gem out of this commercial, metal building! Once my team finishes these 19th century French Louis XIV doors built into a new surround, this grand entrance will set the tone for all the treasures that lie within.

Hiding most of the commercial windows, the beautiful, green antique shutters really add a charming feel to the store.

This area was formerly an 8-foot tall box in the back of the space housing a kitchen and powder bath. Joyce transformed it into a two-story mezzanine, complete with a wonderful spiral staircase that's full of character and Parisian flair! 

Blending the new staircase with the hundred-year-old, iron railing installed on the second floor proved quite a challenge.  Starting with a black sprayed finish on the banister, we applied a series of gray and brown glazes to lend an antique look. 

Joyce created a bar area out of the previous opening in the wall by installing a set of antique French shutters and a ledge made from a a 19th century French fireplace mantel.  The honed Lagos Azul from Walker Zanger is the perfect bar surface, blending the old with the new.

Joyce's daughter, Reid, was in charge of the kitchen redo.  The former prefab oak and formica kitchen was updated with an old marble stone sink and wonderful tile from Walker Zanger. We're going to age the cabinets, and Reid has wonderful shelving and a linen skirt on its way to complete the renovation!

Pulling up the purple carpet and building these vignette walls were the first steps in transforming this showroom space. We plastered all the central walls for an age-old look with depth and character.

With the antique railings as inspiration, my team hand-drew a design to give some personality to the vignettes.

Joyce installed the most amazing antique doors, shutters, railings, sinks and mantels into the new space! Her integration of these elements provides a wealth of inspiration and ideas for using similar materials in our own homes.

Continuing the tradition they've maintained for years at the old location, the new shipment will be in a separate section closed off by shutters until opening day's 10 AM reveal! I got to take a quick look at some of her finds - so exciting!

I love this accent wall that we did by stenciling over blaygeen plaster - a perfect backdrop for Joyce's selection of antique treasures.

Joyce's eye for unique one-of-a-kind items is unparalleled! I adore this vignette, composed of a French trumeau mirror made from 18th century boiserie panels, a painted 19th century Louis XIV style commode and a pair of Swedish fauteuil chairs in Louis XVI style.

This 20th century faux bois cement table from France would be stunning under the arbor at my new shop!!!

This 18th century Louis XVI style bow made from hand-forged iron would make such a fabulous cornice. I can just picture the fabric attached and hung over a little girl's or guest's bed!

To demonstrate how antiques can beautifully complement more contemporary design, Joyce coupled a wire-front, 19th century French enfilade and pair of 19th century French Louis XV-style framed mirrors mounted on old paneling, with this allover stenciled wall!!! The backdrop provides a modern edge while the antiques bring a sense of history and character. 

 

Wonderful! I always adore Joyce's mirrors, and this French Baroque piece mounted on an old boiserie panel is no exception.

This pair of mounted mirrors on old panels from France are definitely statement pieces!  Paired with a carved Louis XVI-style gueridon and French Louis XVI-style bergere, I could take home the entire vinette!

Such a lovely display - a portrait of a woman, attributed to Therese Debains, a Regency-style settee in walnut, a painted 19th century armoire from the region of Alsace, and a French bombe commode with "fun knobs" - they all work together beautifully!

I love how the golden tones play off each other in this arrangement of a Picardie enfilade in wild cherry from France (circa 1820), grouping of 19th century French altarsticks and a classical-style trophy mounted on old boiserie panel. Such a great mix of periods!

Magnificent finds everywhere you look! I spotted quite a few, truly unique pieces in this shipment.

I have my eye on these altar mirrors made from 18th and 19th century elements. Perfect for my bathroom!

This late 18th century Gustavian settee from Sweden is stunning! It even has its original paint!!!

Seeing this collection of 19th century gold leaf beauties, it's no wonder why Joyce is known for her large array of mirrors, and the new space has a whole room filled with pieces like these.

I just can't get enough of the old patinas on her amazing pieces.

What a find! This Swedish classical clock with original mechanisms and paint is a conversation piece.

I spied this lovely 19th century overdoor panel just before it was hung!!

These framed herbiers and water mill buckets hung above a 19th century Louis XIII-style enfilade would create the perfect focal to any room. Can you wrap it up please?!

Here is Joyce posing with long-time manager Chris, daughter Reid, and Beemer at their old store. Too busy prepping for opening day, Joyce and her team couldn't stop for a new pic. When you visit Joyce Horn Antiques, you're likely to also run into Joyce's husband, Will, and the newest addition to the family, Reid's little baby, Cooper!  The business is certainly a family affair - Reid's husband, David, handled all the construction and renovation aspects of the new store.

Don't miss the big reveal! Join the gang at their new space this Tuesday at 10 AM for the grand opening. Across from the Houston Design Center and sandwiched between Walker Zanger and a gold apartment complex, the new location at 7065 Old Katy Road is easy to find. I have always had a love of staircases.  Maybe it’s because they seem to be full of romance or maybe it's because they bring me back to my high school days when the last song at every dance was inevitably "Stairway to Heaven" by rock legend Led Zeppelin.

Loving Lucite

HISTORY OF LUCITE
Lucite, making a huge resergence in today's interiors, is associated with decor of the 1960s and 1970s.  Developed in the early 1930s, lucite was introduced by DuPont in 1936, the same year Rohm & Haas debuted Plexiglas (the same polymer, under a different brand name). Lucite has become a brand name like Kleenex which refers to any kind of acrylic resin. Durning World War II, these light shatter-resistant materials were reserved for the military and were used in submarine periscopes and aircraft windshields. Following the war, interior decorators began using Lucite in posh homes in New York, Paris and Hollywood.

 

Helena Rubinstein, the Polish multimillionaire cosmetics mogul, had her now infamous sleigh bed made in Paris in the 30’s. Concealed fluorescent lights made the bed’s headboard and footboard glow. She was known to have business meetings in her bedroom—she in her bed and her advisors sitting in the 8 matching Lucite chairs that surrounded it.

Artists and fashion designers, impelled by the appreciation of space age design, began using ultra-modern materials in their work in the 1950s and ’60s. Dalí painted on Perspex, the sculptor Leroy Lamis made geometric cubes from Plexiglas and Marilyn Monroe donned Lucite sandals.

The Love of the Banquette

Booth? Table? or Banquette?...

From everyday seating in cozy breakfast nooks, to elegant dining rooms and seating areas, banquettes have been popping up on the interior design radar with gorgeous new designs and unique placements. 

The term Banquette is derived from the French word for bench. It is traditionally a built in piece of furniture that fits into a corner or against a wall, that takes up less space than an assortment of chairs around a table. Contemporary renditions of this seating trend include use of a wider variety of furniture including using antique couches or the back of a kitchen island as the base for the banquette. Some new versions even include extra storage space or cubbies for pets, perfect for a smaller home or those living in apartments or highrises!

A Great Shopping Day in LA

When I was in California visiting my husband’s family, I got the chance to check out two amazing stores – Gianetti Home and Kier Design - with my sister-in-law, Heather! We broke away one day and had so much fun seeing some of LA’s leading interior design shops. First stop, a visit to Brooke Gianetti's store, Gianetti Home, in hopes of meeting her! Brooke writes one of my favorite blogs, Velvet & Linen.  

 

I was expecting the store front to look like her home - full of character and brilliant landscaping, as you can see on her site. Not sure what I was thinking though... this is a store front in LA (11980 San Vicente)! But you'll notice all of Brooke's signature warm touches and creative architectural accessories can be found inside. 

 

Here I am - so excited to go in!!! Unfortunately, I never made it that far. The door was locked, and THEY WERE CLOSED ON SATURDAY!  Just my luck…  Oh well, we still got some great inspiration peeking into the windows. 

   The shop is so pretty and has a definite liveliness to it as it's also a working design and architecture studio for Brooke and her husband, Steve, who work side by side. Brooke offers interior design, and Steve does architecture and building design. I learned on my visit that the two also do landscapes and have a great little selection of pots on display. How wonderful!

Even though I wasn’t able to go inside, I was amazed with how much I was able to take in through the windows. The store’s full of French chairs, linen slipcovers, candles, big baskets and other great furnishings and accessories. There's a lovely soft color palette throughout, and I adore the way Brooke and her team have grouped pieces together so that it feels more like someone's home than a store.

What a wonderful collection of antique mirrors mixed in with some industrial pieces! Brooke has a great eye, pairing primarily French and Belgian antiques with outdoor and industrial elements. I had a great time getting a glimpse into their store and hopefully I’ll be able to go back soon.

Fortunately Heather and I had better luck at our next stop – Kier Design in Pacific Palisades. It is so charming and has some amazing, unique pieces. If you’re ever in LA, it is absolutely worth the trip!!! 

Interior designer and owner, Heidi Kier certainly has her plate full, running not just this wonderful shop but also a very successful design business! But she does both so graciously and displays an incredible array of accessories, lighting and furniture.

Kier Design has such a unique mix of items that Heidi has purchased from around the States and across the globe—it’s like a big treasure chest!  I love how her presentation and display really provides some great ideas for accessorizing tables and filling in little nooks and crannies.  The nice neutral color palette accented with aqua and turquoise is so pretty!

She has a huge collection of vintage, old Hollywood-type pieces. This beautiful 1950s martini set is absolutely delightful! You just can’t help but love the color.

I always enjoy seeing lamps made from repurposed objects. These were made from old balustrades and have a beautiful aged, original finish!  I actually have a bunch of antique balustrades from old historic buildings in Houston and Galveston just sitting at my workshop… I need to do the same with them.  Believe it or not, they’re 200 years old - It’s hard to find things that old in Texas!

Heidi collects an amazing variety of fossils and shells! And I was pleasantly surprised that they had such reasonable prices in her upscale location. I love these sand dollar fossils – amazing! Sand dollars were my favorite thing to collect and search for when walking the beach as a child.

I wish I had bought these to accessorize the shelves in my new den – I’ve never been able to find any as big. Their color tones are so wonderful and have a great bit of sheen.

This is such a great combination – a framed piece of antique seaweed and the varying heights of these French and Italian candlesticks!  I love how both Kier Design and Gianetti Home bring the outside in by incorporating some natural elements into their designs. I would take this whole collection!

Heidi has a few of these amazing statues, made for her by the artist. They are truly a stunning way to bring a hint of the beach into European design!

She is very proud of her vintage assortment of Murano lamps… as she should be.  I have never seen quite a collection!  They are a wonderful way to tie in a contemporary style with a bit of the past, and they’re definitely one of a kind with different shapes and colors to choose from.

These heart-shaped, stone vases were so cool and unusual that I had to buy several for gifts. At thirty dollars each, I couldn't go wrong! Notice also the beautiful white coral placed all around – so beautiful!

Heather was excited about her steal of the day - Aidan Gray candlesticks at half off!!!  Kier Design is a great place to go to find unique pieces in a wide range of price points! And there were so many pieces too – I think it would take days to really see everything in the store!

Heidi loves doing her own custom designs and refurbishes many of the items she finds.  She was so sweet to show us her secret stash in the back workroom!!!  I can’t thank you enough, Heidi, for being so kind and giving us a tour around your beautiful store! Kier Design sells many of its pieces online and ships them to you…I should know, I bought several things there.  Perfect for those of us who don’t live in California!

A Week with Segreto and Me!!

My weeks are so fun working with clients to make their homes their own - I love finding new ways to bring in the homeowner's personality. I wanted to share a few of these projects with you and give you a glimpse of what I did last week!

 

Homes 1 & 2: Floors!!!

For this floor design, I worked with homeowner Alicia and designer Lisa Rowe to create a statement in her new entry hall. They wanted something with a contemporary edge to set the tone of the rest of the home.  Since there are wood floors throughout, we decided to do something bold and paint the floors in the foyer in a rich gray and cream graphic combo! The beautiful landscape painting by artist Darlene Wall, purchased from Segreto Gallery for Alicia's previous home, looks great in its new setting. 

 
The newly laid wood floors were painted BM OC-53 first with an acrylic floor paint. A sticky paper was applied to the floors so we could hand draw the pattern.  Segreto artist, Debbie Moseley, who also has artwork in our Gallery, is calculating the math to layout the design.  I never thought I would have to remember those high school geometry classes in my line of work!!!

After the pattern was drawn on the floors, we used an exacto knife to cut out the design, leaving areas of the basecoat exposed.  A coat of BM-HC-166 floor paint was rolled over the entire surface. 

Here is Alex, my main decorative artist, pulling the remaining sticky paper from the floor to reveal the white undercoat of the graphic pattern. This home is simply wonderful - I hope to take you on a tour of the house in its entirety once the gals have finished!

In the second house, which has a more traditional style, we worked with sweet Melinda to create a border in her entrance that would set it apart from the open floor plan of her home. Taking inspiration from a beautiful tile mosaic, we added a shadow line to the custom painted design for a beveled effect.

 

Homes 3 & 4 - Shutter Doors!!!

I just can't get enough of antique shutters! Ever since I first took the shutters from my dining room and figured out how to give them a beautiful aged look, we have been mastering the subtle art of antiquing new or existing shutters for many of our clients.

These newly built and aged shutters designed by Steve (who is both the homeowner and builder on this one) and designer Darla Bankston May, add so much character to this butlers pantry! The architect of this home is none other than the famed Kevin Harris - can't wait to show you more of it at a later date!

These 200 year-old distressed shutters from France that I found for display at our shop served as our inspiration to transform the shutters in our client Jill's master bedroom suite. 

Jill's 35 year-old shutters, previously sprayed a 70s gold color, were stripped and then layered with paints and glazes to emulate the antique ones we have. Designer Lindsey Herod, who just opened a Houston branch for the New York firm, Celerie Kemble, is spearheading the master suite makeover.

 

Homes 5, 6 & 7 - Wine Rooms, Stone and Brick!!!

What a cool feature for a wine room - old barrels embedded in the brick! I had a lot of fun creating a mural for designer Janita Lo that would complement this unique element of the home! 


For the Tuscan countryside mural (still in progress), we framed the beautiful scene with painted bricks to emulate the real brick in the room.  I would love to share a glass of my favorite Chardonnay in this interesting and inviting wine cellar! 

 

This is a close up of another brick feature wall that we had applied in a boys room for designer Sheila Lyon. Seeing the whole wall painted with the trompe l'oeil brick really tricks the eye!

For this kitchen, homeowner Nita wanted to pull in some of the Austin stone that they had used in the adjoining den. The painted version we did really ties the two rooms together!

Painting the label of a favorite wine onto a cabinet or wall is always a great personal touch for a wine cellar or bar area.  The curved cream element of this wine cabinet seemed a bit out of place.  But by aging the cabinets and painting a soft design, we were able to pull everything together in a charming fashion.

While we were busy painting in the cellar, talented homeowner Gwen was getting ready for a dinner party! Look at that table, just masterful!!!

 

Birthday Wishes and a Graduation Extravaganza!!

I also turned 51 this week, and it wasn't so bad!! I started the day with a company meeting that evolved into a birthday surprise and ended the evening with a wonderful dinner with my family. This huge bouquet is just one of the thoughtful gifts my Segreto team showered on me!

Then we were off to College Station to celebrate my daughter's graduation from Texas A&M University. So proud of her!!!!!!!! Congratulations, Kirby!  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!  'Til next Monday - xo  Leslie

Defining Spaces

The latest issue of Antique Shops & Designers-a must read magazine- is out and I thought I would share parts of my article, using projects we have just completed. Thanks to my blog friends for the topic!!!

In today's open floor plans, creating interest and definition can be challenging. Do you paint selected areas a different color or elect for one color throughout? By using paint colors effectively, you can open up spaces while allowing the home's architecture, furnishings, accessories and art to shine.  In this entry, we wanted to give a bit a of personalty without having to go down the hallway with the pattern, so we opted for a handpainted panel design.

The colors used complement the cabinetry and accessories in the home so everything flows together.

In the same house this lovely homeowner wanted to define her master bath area while leaving the walls the same as her bedroom.  We decided to apply a treatment that is used in Europe. We painted the ceiling and continued the color 3 inches down onto the wall and then handpainted a pinstripe to add definition to the space, while leaving wall colors consistent. A panel done in colors that coordinate with the tiles adds an extra element to the inset tub area. 

 

Accent walls typically refer to one wall in a space that's painted a different color. While this technique works well in offices or ultra-contemporary settings, accent walls can feel a bit severe. Your eye falls on the shape they create, where the walls and ceiling end, making the space appear more confined. A successful twist on this trend is to use the same background color throughout the room and then apply design in a complementary color on the wall you wish to highlight. This enhances the space's flow by keeping a common thread in your surroundings.


 

Painting a beautiful medallion around a chandelier can do the same, like this ceiling medallion design we implemented over plaster. 

Crown moldings can also receive a special treatment to define spaces. In a home with open living and dining areas flanking the entranceway, Segreto crafted a finish on the moldings to replicate old, worn picture frames, bringing a bit of the past to these newly remodeled rooms and setting them apart from other spaces.

Distressed beams, wood planked ceilings and plaster ceiling designs lend wonderful texture to a room. The right finisher can affordably transform boxed beams or pine two by fours into sensational, reclaimed lookalikes.

 

 Painted floors can take the place of inlayed stone or tile to delineate an area. They bring interest and distinction to a kitchen, dining room or foyer and allow for easy cleanup of spills or dust.

Giving cabinetry its own unique finish is another way to differentiate one space from another while leaving the walls and ceilings in the same color. Since den and kitchen cabinetry tends to cover the majority of the wall, custom finishes on large pieces remove the need for different wall colors. 

 

 Paint is one of the most budget-friendly ways to break up the spaces in an open floor plan. In this hallway, which leads from the back of the house to the kitchen, cherry blossoms painted throughout over the same painted base color gives personality to this walkthough space. 

 By using these paint techniques, you can create accent floors, walls, ceilings and cabinets that both customize rooms and provide a sense of spaciousness and continuity throughout your home.  To see all the issues of Antigue Shops & Designers go here

What does going green (low VOC) mean?

Trying to go green sounds good, but diving into the technical jargon and milling through companies marketing claims can be overwhelming! I am reminded of when the low fat craze began and the constant struggle to lose a pound or two. I pored over the marketing claims of low fat foods in the grocery store, spending way more than the hour I had allotted to do my weekly shopping. I went for foods with the lowest possible fat content trying to stick to the rule of thumb - nothing over 30% fat calorie ratio. 

From the Wild Mountain

Loaded with my arsenal of foods and complete with my favorite healthy choice cookies—I was ready to lose weight!! Of course, later many of these products were exposed as having twice the amount of sugars and carbs in them and more preservatives and chemicals in each bite that the military has in their arsenal.

 

  Oikos

I have felt the same way going through the volatile organic compound (VOC) ratios in paint products that claim to be green with one exception—this time I had to pull out my readers to read the fine print. The VOC’s are the harmful emissions that paint, glues, stains, fabrics, furniture, cleaners and other things in your home emit. VOC levels are typically expressed in grams per liter or g/l.   Up until 1999, the content in paints was pushing 1000 g/l but federal regulations have since set the VOC content limit in paint at 250 grams per liter.

Green Seal, the developer of environmental standards, certifies interior paints as low-VOC if the content is below 50 g/l for flat coat or 150 g/l for non-flat coat. Zero-VOC paints are paints that have a VOC content of 5 g/l or less. Most major paint companies now produce low VOC paint. If you are really interested in the guidelines make sure the pigments put in the paint are low VOC as well.

Watch out!!  Many companies will use low odor in their marketing to portray that their products are meeting the green standards when they are not. Basic rule of thumb—products that smell more have higher VOC’s.

 


Slow Fashioned

The new green movement is highlighting the fact that the older, more natural, ways of doing things are not only healthier for us physically but also healthier for a longer living planet. Green isn’t only considering producing new products with low VOC’s, but also reusing materials that we have to save the environment and reduce the amount of material we send to landfills.

Some ways are easy and can even help save on your decorating budget. Recycle! Recycle! Recycle! Look around your home at what you have. Do you have furniture, light fixtures, hardware, mirrors, kitchen cabinets or built-ins with great lines that just may need a face lift? With specialty paint treatments as shown above, these can be transformed at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new items.

During a past visit to Tuscany I noticed many restaurants served only fresh, preservative free foods and wines.  The food was so beautifully presented and delicious that I found myself indulging in 3 course breakfasts and 5 course lunches and dinners complete with wine and dessert.  I was amazed that I didn’t gain a single pound! I became a believer that chemicals and preservatives which so much of the food we consume in the states contain, can’t be broken down which not only prevents our bodies from metabolizing the food as efficiently, but also puts a strain on our organs when doing so. 

Food analogies help me relate to so many things-haha. Chemicals that surround us in any fashion, if they can't break down naturally, are unhealthy to our bodies and to our earth. Well, after all of my research, I find myself definitely on the road to a greener way of life! Recycle, reuse and refurbish what I have when possible, pay close attention to labels and buy lower VOC paint when it makes sense financially and aesthetically.

Spotlight on Brooke McGuyer Interiors

It is so fun to work with up and coming designers—this project with the talented Brooke McGuyer was no exception!!!

Talented as she is beautiful and sweet here Brooke is in her office. Her talent of mixing unique elements together to create an inviting and functional space is represented well in her own home office. From the custom window treatments (fabric Chenonceau by Shumacher) to the island that has been retrofitted to accommodate old French crates used as sliding drawers, to the fab lighting from 3 Doors she has created room for storage, a large workspace and a warm vibe.

 

 One of the first projects Brooke and I have worked together on this dining room has become one of my all-time favorites!! This was a Coventry Homes Build on Your Lot project. They, as well, were delightful to work with and I think you’ll see the home turned out stunning. Choosing a beautiful plaster for the walls and ceiling which blends with the BM China White trim, we hand painted a delightful design inspired by an antique Scandinavian wallpaper on her walls pulling from the colors of her oh so fab fabrics.

 

But our work isn’t the only wonderful part of this room!!  The antique French chairs, backed with Michael Devine fabric mesh perfectly with the host and hostess chairs by Quatrine!! The Rogers & Goffigon silk, Panache Dolce draperies look like a ball gown and the 18th century Italian Crystal Chandelier from Antica Collection are the perfect balance to the reclaimed beams in the room.

 The entry foyer flanked by the dining room living room is also enveloped in smooth plaster.  Love the contemporary art by Segreto Gallery's artist Stacy McNair mixed with antiques.  The 19th century French painted demilune is from Liz Spradling Antiques and the antique Louis Philippe Mirror from Back Row Antiques. Look at the nail heads on the runner going up the stairs—just love that detail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 The living room is quite charming with the Pecky Cypress Ceiling and plastered walls!!  Feels like a parlor and lead into a sunroom. She has the most beautiful drapes coming, which will certainly complete this room.

Carrying the plaster back to the den the cost stayed in check by not plastering the ceiling.  When you have molding and box beams around the room you can pick a color to match or complement fabrics and still maintain a sophisticated look. In this case the trim is BM China White semi-gloss and the ceiling is Vapor Trails 50% formula. Love the pair of slipcovered sofas from Lam Bespoke, the antique zinc dormer mirror hung over cast stone fireplace and the beautiful rug from Turkish Carpets, Inc.

Such a pretty clean look in this kitchen. The BM China white walls and cabinets mixed with the island in BM Vapor trails and the plastered hood carry elements from the adjacent open den to create continuity.  This gave a stopping point for the plaster, creating the look while staying within her clients budget!!  Love the honed Calacata Borgia marble from Walker Zanger, the pair of custom lanterns over island from Lighting, Inc., and the antique Swedish Mora clock from Eloquence.  

The powder room is dreamy.  I would love to say that our plaster in a pale Blaygeen color is the star of the room, but that vintage French chandelier is to die for!!! Wish I had a better pic of it!! No, what I really wish is that it were in my house!

The upstairs is just as charming!!! The daybed, the vintage Lucite table from MAI, the 1940’s chandelier—all ideal together!! But look at the marvelous design on the top of the drapes-the perfect finishing detail!!! It’s these details that make Brooke's work so brilliant!!

Such a pretty master with its walls painted in Farrow & Ball Pale Powder.  The spot on choice to complement the beautiful window and bedding fabrics by Elizabeth Benefield and the Chelsea Textiles bench. I really loved the antique alabaster lamps—what a pretty shape!

What’s not to love in this spacious spa feeling master bath! With Statuary marble, polished countertops and backsplash from Walker Zanger, the mirrors from Horchow, sconces from Visual Comfort and the empire freestanding soaker tub by Waterworks, this master bath would really take me away!!

Our tour ends with this fun playroom with the Antelope Carpet from Glen Eden. I can’t get enough of these sliding barn doors and I really love how Brooke has done them here!!  Thank you so much Brooke for sharing your own office and your latest client project with us. I so admire how you mix so many elements seamlessly and appreciate how you can make decisions, within budgets, that craft each room to look like a million bucks.  You are not just up and coming—in my book you have arrived!!! Showcase Splendor!!!

I love working on any project with this dynamic trio: The Owen Group, Richard Price Custom Homes and Travis Mattingly of Architectural Solutions, Inc. This 2013 showcase home to benefit the Evelyn’s Park Conservancy, a new park to be constructed in Bellaire, was no exception.

As you enter this home, you are greeted by the warm and inviting entryway painted in SW Accessible beige which complements its beautiful hardwoods from Custom Floors Unlimited and the delicate railings. This home was custom built for a family with 4 kids, so although beauty was important, it also had to be functional and livable.

The plaster in the dining room sets it off from the rest of the house. The comfy bench seating and upholstered host and hostess chairs create lots of seating for all ages. Those slipcovers can be removed and washed so no need to worry about the kids spilling!!!

The entrance leads back to the kitchen den breakfast area.  The openness of this space gives lots of room for family and friends to hang out and also works for more formal entertaining. Beautiful accessories, like the pair of Italian candlesticks on the coffee table, complete the room. I love how the doors just open up to the backyard!!

All the cabinets were built on site, giving them the wonderful furniture lines that Richard Price is noted for.  Segreto did their magic on them to complete the look and I love the chicken wire and linen fabric that Tami added!!! The clean lined upholstered pieces are from Custom Creations Furniture.

This charming Country French kitchen gives a pop to its neutral surroundings! With two counter surfaces, Leuders limestone on the surrounding counters and walnut top on the island we combined two cabinet finishes giving each its own personality. They found the perfect tile for the floor at Alkusari Stone. The plaster hood combined with the lovely tile details, such as the back splash from the Medina Collection, really makes this kitchen a showcase.

The powder bath is both simple and elegant with plastered walls and glazed cabinetry.  Love the floors in here from Custom Floors Unlimited - so fun!!!

This hallway has so many subtle architectural details. Notice the arch over door to the master creating a special entrance to the suite and the paneling going up the stairs. I like the way Tami chose the paints to be tone on tone where these details don’t jump out at you but just create texture and warmth.

This is a WOW master suite! Painted in SW Tavern Taupe, which really offsets that lush cream bedding and upholstery by Custom Creations Furniture and the Swedish demilune tables from Joyce Horn Antiques. This is a room to relax and feel pampered in!!

 

My favorite master baths are ones that feel like a room. Spacious enough to relax and watch TV in—there is a built in armoire on the other side--it feels like a spa resort!!!

The upstairs game room is as pretty as the downstairs den!! Love the ottoman in the center and those hide rugs are both beautiful and indestructible!!!

Staged for the show, Tami did a wonderful job making them feel fun warm and inviting and fit for kids from 5-32!!

This loft drawn by Travis really makes use of tucked away spaces and gives a “cool” feature for the kids!! Sorry I forgot to put the rug back!!

Hats off to Tami for picking such wonderful surface combinations like these in the  shower. The floors in the  bathroom came from Walker Zanger and are "Nature Color" 1NATWHI-648. The shower from Marazzi is Studio Series Pearl White.

She did such a great job picking the colors and outfitting the furnishings for the kids zone!!!!

The window in the laundry gives the room such personality. Love the floors - Palm Frame Hex (cream) from Walker Zanger. The Counters are Leuders Limestone and the backsplash is Kresh cream.

The outdoor kitchen, which is just as thought out as the inside spaces, feels like a cozy bar with two tvs neon light and a fireplace. What a treat to work in, and then tour, this house after it was furnished.  Tami Owen from The Owen Group, Richard Price of Richard Price Custom Homes and Travis Mattingly of Architectural Solutions, Inc. worked so well together and under the stresses of a showcase deadline to create a fantastic home that this family of 6 will enjoy and build memories in for years to come!!! For the Love of Pink!!!!

First recorded in the 17th century to describe the dianthus flower, the color pink has expanded to include countless shades and has become known for its associations with love, romance and beauty.


Until the mid 1900s, pink was mainly considered a masculine color. A June 1918 article from the trade publication Earnshaw's Infants' Department said, 'The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl. '(Smithsonian)”.

During the 1940s and 50s in the US, retailers and pop culture began marketing pink for girls and blue for boys.  Ultra feminine movie stars like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn wore iconic pink dresses in films like How to Marry a Millionaire and Breakfast at Tiffany’s , strengthening pink’s association with femininity.

Girly products such as Barbie and Mary Kay cosmetics adopted pink as their color and it became the signature color for breast cancer awareness.

 

Vogue

Italian born French fashion designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, coined the color "Shocking Pink" in 1947. She called the color "life-giving" and used it in many of her visionary designs.

The phrase was so popular Schiaparelli even developed a signature perfume "Shocking" branded in pink!

Pink in the Home!!!

Pink was extremely popular during the exuberant design phase that took place post World War II. Everyone looks good in a pink light, so it was an especially good color for kitchens and bathrooms. It is estimated that a 5 million pink bathrooms were installed in 20 million+ homes built in the United States between 1946 - 1966.

Even designer extraordinaire, Pam Pierce, designs with Pink as she does in this promo photo for her new magazine MILIEU, which will premiere soon!!! Can't wait!!!

In the past few decades, shades of pink have been getting a lot more attention in the interior design world. Expanding from the dusky mauve popular in the 80s, today you can find homes with every tone of pink from soft blush tones to hot pinks. The shades are endless!

Farrow & Ball Pink Ground was used by designer Richard Coleman in this pretty living room where we finished the cabinetry. 

 

Sorry about the pic, but just had to show this darling nursery where we painted French panels behind the bed in tone on tone PINK!! Pinks often grow pinker when painted so pick a shade less pink and lighter than you think you want!!

Blessed to Be an American!

America is filled with beautiful lands, wonderful people, diverse cultures, and so many opportunities. I so hope that as Americans we can keep the strength and moral compass that our fore fathers had when starting this nation.  I hadn’t read the Declaration of independence in quite some time and thought I would quote from it with some pretty home inspired pictures of course!

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
